You’ve been waiting all year, and now it’s almost time for the 2018 Old Fort Days Futurity and Derby. It’ll be on May 14-19 at Kay Rodgers Park, and it’s going to be so much fun. Let’s take a look at what you can expect if you attend, and then, you can get ready for the event.
The Barrel Futurity
The Old Fort Days Futurity is the richest barrel futurity out there, making it the one you want to attend this year. It’s only open to foals that are four years of age or younger and haven’t competed in barrel races prior to Dec. 1, 2017. Nominations were due Dec. 1, 2017, which isn’t nearly as early as it is for some futurity events. In fact, some events require people to nominate foals a full year in advance. That makes this event much more accessible. Maybe that’s why it has so much in prize money available. The estimated purse is more than $350,000.
This is one of the most exciting races around. People put their foals up before they truly know how they will perform. They are betting on the future when they put them up, and the truth will come out during the race.

The Old Fort Days Super Derby is open to horses aged five and six years old that were paid in full at the 2016 or 2017 Fort Days Futurity. It’s also open to horses of that age that paid a late fee of $2,500. This has an estimated purse of $80,000, and it’s expected to bring in some of the best horses and riders around.
The money is enticing, but it’s not an easy job. The entire ride might take 16 seconds, but it’s the hardest 16 seconds these riders have ever faced. The men and women who sit on top of barrel horses often suffer broken bones in training, but they say it’s all worth it when they get to compete.
Barrel horse racing is fun to watch, but most people don’t want to compete it in. It’s so dangerous that they would much rather sit behind the wheel of a Toyota. You can get the new Toyota of your dreams at J. Pauley Toyota in Fort Smith, Arkansas. See us before the Derby, and we will help you find the perfect wheels for all your needs.
