Do your kids spent most of their time in front of the TV or with a smartphone in hand? If so, it’s time for a Nature Break. The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center hosts a Nature Break every Friday from 3:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. This short Nature Break is designed for kiddos aged three to seven. The staff comes up with a new activity every week, so head out and let your kids have fun in the great outdoors.
Not sure if this is for you? Check out some benefits of spending time in nature.
Makes Kids More Active
Video games, cell phones, and televisions don’t exactly promote activity. When your kids take a nature break though, they’ll be up and moving. Your kids will get a lot more exercise than they get hanging out at home. Exercise helps kids maintain a healthy weight and also reduces stress. That’s a great reason to say hello to a nature break.
Exercise is one way to reduce stress. Just being in nature reduces stress as well though. When kids are in a busy environment, they have to use what is referred to as directed attention. They have to tune out all of those city sounds, and that is exhausting. They end up tired, stressed, and ready to go home.
They don’t encounter the same distractions in nature though. They can relax and enjoy their surroundings without putting in a lot of effort. This is very relaxing. The stress melts away in nature, and kids feel more alert and less tired as well.
It Stimulates Kids’ Minds
You want your kids to think about things, and not just while at school. Nature stimulates the brain and makes kids think. Kids can’t help but think about the planet and life when they’re out in nature. They are likely to ask questions and want to learn more. Your kids might even end up with a new educational hobby after going on a few Nature Breaks.
